RECAP: LA Premier of the Stretch and Bobbito Documentary – “Radio that Changed Lives”

There was standing room only Monday night at the Regent Theater, the night hip-hop curators and ambassadors Bobbito and DJ Stretch Armstrong premiered “Radio that Changed Lives,” a documentary about the duo and their radio show that did indeed do just that. Beatjunkies.com and The5thElementmag.com provided event coverage.  The film features interviews from Big L, Nas, Jay-Z, Wu-Tang Clan, Biggie, Eminem, The Fugees, Souls of Mischief, Busta Rhymes and many more, before they were celebrities, as they recall moments at the WKCR studio at Columbia University. Stretch and Bobbito pioneered a platform that served as a launching pad for artists, and inspired future radio show gatekeepers, like Sway and King Tech. Stretch and Bobbito aired from 1990-1998, years most heads consider the golden era, and the era that an underground existed. This is the decade before the internet changed music, and media outlets were limited. Some of the best artists from these eras had a space to blackout on the air, to rhyme without regard for what the industry supported, and the footage and original audio is priceless. One of the most interesting stories in the documentary, is that of the growth of Stretch and Bobbito as the show that changed the lives of so many listeners, changes them as well, in a sort of cypher. But, don’t take our word for it, you can stream “Stretch and Bobbito: Radio that Changed Lives,” HERE.
